Goodnessly is an app designed to help health-conscious shoppers identify nutritious and eco-friendly products by providing clear nutrition and environmental scores, information on additives and healthy alternatives. The Goodnessly app aims to empower consumers by deciphering indedients and allowing shoppers to quickly and easily compare products.
The 'Goodnessly Nutritional Score' is a comprehensive rating system that provides a quick snapshot of the overall nutritional profile of a food product. It is designed to help consumers make healthier food choices without needing a degree in nutrition. The score takes into account several key factors, including the quantity of specific components in the product, nutirional value, the presence of additives, and whether the product contains organic ingredients.
Nutritional Component: The base of the Goodnessly Nutritional Score takes inspiration from the Australian Health Star Rating. This rating system considers the quantity of seven core components found within the food product: energy, saturated fat, total sugars, sodium, protein, dietary fibre, and 'fruit vegetables nuts and legumes' (FVNL) content. Each of these components plays a different role in our diet - some are nutrients we should aim to consume in larger amounts, while others we should limit. The algorithm adjusts the score based on these factors, giving higher scores to products with more beneficial nutrients and lower scores to those high in components like saturated fat and sugar.
Additives: The Goodnessly Nutritional Score also considers the presence of additives in the food product. Additives can include preservatives, colorings, flavorings, and other substances added to food to improve its taste, appearance, or extend its shelf life. Many additives are safe and even beneficial, but some can be harmful if consumed in large amounts or frequently. The score accounts for both the presence and the health effects of these additives, penalising products that contain unhealthy additives while rewarding those that avoid them.
Organic Ingredients: Finally, the score factors in whether the product contains organic ingredients. Organic foods are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilisers. If a product contains organic ingredients, it gets a boost in its Goodnessly Nutritional Score.
In summary, the Goodnessly Nutritional Score is an all-encompassing measure of a food product's nutritional value. It takes into account not just the quantity of specific nutrients, but also the overall quality of the ingredients used, providing a more complete picture of the product's healthiness.
Environmental Score
Many of us want to make environmentally conscious purchases but understanding each products impact on the planet is difficult and time consuming. The Goodnessly's Environmental Score is a comprehensive rating system designed to evaluate the environmental impact of a product based on several critical factors:
Environmental Certifications: The score takes into account whether the product has received any environmental certifications acknowledging its contribution to sustainability and ecological preservation. These certifications, awarded by authorised bodies, signify that the product meets specific standards related to environmental protection.
Travel Distance: The score considers the distance a product has travelled to reach Australia, with locally-sourced products receiving higher scores. This aspect reflects the environmental impact of goods transportation, including carbon emissions associated with long-distance shipping.
Environmental Policies of the Product's Origin Country: The score also factors in the environmental policies of the country from where the product originates, based on the Environmental Performance Index (EPI). The EPI is a method of quantifying and numerically marking the environmental performance of a country's policies.
Packaging Sustainability: The type of packaging used for the product and its sustainability also contribute to the score. Products packaged in sustainable materials, especially recycled ones, are rated higher. This acknowledges the importance of reducing waste and promoting recycling in mitigating environmental harm.
Ingredients Impact on Species Survival: Lastly, the score considers whether the product uses ingredients that could potentially affect the survival of certain species, such as palm oil. Products that avoid such ingredients receive a higher score, reflecting the importance of biodiversity conservation.
In summary, the Goodnessly's Environmental Score provides an in-depth assessment of a product's environmental footprint, empowering consumers to make more ecologically responsible purchasing decisions.
